Last summer I made a dress using Merchant & Mills ‘Scandium’ linen, a beautiful neon yellow woven with a natural beige colour. Perfect for sunny days! I still had some leftover pieces of fabric, so last weekend I pieced them together making a stripe feature of the beige selvedge – the straps are made from webbing I use for my market aprons (No12) which is from a UK supplier on Ebay.
….just a few teeny scraps left, to make into lavender bags.
I found this printed linen square (I think it’s a 60’/70’s napkin) at ‘Hilly Fields Midsummer Fayre’ (Brockley, London) a couple of years ago.
I wanted to use it, but keep it in one piece – so decided to make a feature of it on a square top. Pink wouldn’t normally be my first choice of colour, but, not having access to fabric shops in lockdown, means using up what I have. I tacked then machine stitched the print square on to the pink linen following the inner circles of the design, so the top wouldn’t ‘bag’ when it was worn.
The front of the top was now a bit heavy! To balance it, I stitched a linen square to the back piece of the top and made an embroidered design using a detail from the front print. Luckily I have a little collection of embroidery threads – I used a chain stitch.
Spent a fun morning yesterday, making myself a dress with vintage cloth given to me by my sister-in-law. It’s an altered Merchant & Mills Camber Dress pattern, sleeveless, and with added pockets into the side seams.
A couple of hours, one morning this week, spent making myself a nightie with lovely lightweight paisley fabric from Merchant & Mills. The pattern is Simplicity 1561, but I didn’t elasticate the sleeves….One thing I would say though, is that threading the elastic through the channel was very tricky!
