An order for four 4:3 aprons in ochre denim, blue denim and one blue denim with red straps (to go with the charcoal denim with red straps they ordered last week). The aprons are for for an art conservators studio in central London.

Overlocker!…
Big thank you to my friend Fran for gifting me an overlocker! Today I spent a few hours setting it up…I needed the magnifying glass to peer into the machine’s innerds, trying to thread it. I was very impressed with the instruction book and colour coded threading diagram inside the machine itself… now looking forward to some fun with thread colour combinations…

New apron No14…
Working on a new apron. It started as a doodle, on the morning of my open studio day when it was a bit quiet.
Since then I’ve drafted a pattern, made a toile (calico mock-up) and made lots of making notes and changes.
I bought some dark navy, crisp cotton twill in Rolls & Rems Lewisham last week, which I need to do a wash test on (to calculate shrinkage and colour loss) before I make a sample apron….

The charcoal denim has a nice silvery grey reverse side.

Open studio 2017…
My first ever open studio went really well – had lots of visitors and great conversations about design craft amd making… didn’t get any photos though, too busy talking!
Thanks to everyone who came and to South East Makers Club for making it all happen!
Open studio nearly ready…
It’s taken a couple of weeks to get everything sorted for the open studio on Saturday. Lots of planning, compiling and printing, exhibition diagrams, written information, signs, and moving the furniture about!

Cutting out new aprons over the weekend…
New No 4:3 colourway charcoal/red, and also new No12 half apron (not pictured, too dark and rainy!) in heavy charcoal denim, cut out ready to sew this week – using my two new trestle tables!
Sparky Studio…
Last week I began the process of taking over the front room as my studio! The room was so underused and my Sparky work stations and ‘stuff’ are at different locations all over the house.
Working in there has improved my productivity already. I’ve decided not to have the computer in there…it’s too much of a distraction, but I do have a radio and my mobile phone. I bought two folding trestle tables, so that I don’t have to cut out fabric and patterns on the floor (which gives me heartburn) and moved my Benina sewing machine into the room to join my Texi industrial machine that has been in there since January… it’s all still a work progress though.
If you’re wondering where we sit these days, we’ve turned my eldest daughter’s bedroom into a ‘snug’ with a .T.V. and big sofa under her high loft bed (she is a 5th year vet student and only comes home for a few days every now and then)….there’s also the advantage of the amazing view across Deptford/Greenwich to Canary Wharf/Docklands.
